Here is a little exercise for you. Compare and contrast how Cory Booker responded to a “gotcha” question by a Breitbart reporter with what Trump said in a tweet and what Trump’s press secretary said in an interview. You can find a video of Booker's response here. Booker was brilliant. Trump—well, I may be a little biased about Trump, so you be the judge of how he did. First the Booker video.
Now, compare Booker's cry for decency and unity with Donald Trump's tweet.
The Never Trumper Republicans, though on respirators with not many left, are in certain ways worse and more dangerous for our Country than the Do Nothing Democrats. Watch out for them, they are human scum!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 23, 2019
Trump’s Press Secretary, Stephanie Grisham, took a view that was a bit more expansive than Trump. She seems to claim that ANYONE who opposes Trump is scum. When asked whether Trump regretted accusing Never Trump Republicans of being scum, this is what she said:
No, no, he shouldn’t. The people who are against him, and who have been against him, and have been working against him since the day they took office are just that.
It is horrible that people are working against a president who’s delivering results for this country and has been since day one. And the fact that people continue to try to negate anything he is doing and take away from the good work he is doing on behalf of the American people, they deserve strong language like that.
Now, call me off the wall, but I think anyone who has demonized undocumented immigrants over 500 times, has torn kids away from parents, and has thrown them in concentration camps is someone who runs on hate. And maybe I’m a bit confused, but I think a President who calls his opponents scum and who demands that Hillary be locked up without even a trial might not be the type of guy who really has the interest of the American people at heart. And maybe I am being silly, but when the guy whose lawyer argues in court that the President can shoot someone and not even be investigated until he leaves the Presidency—when THAT guy is in a position to appoint hundreds of judges to our judicial system, I get a little queasy.
And most of all, maybe I’m being illogical when I am frightened that a reckless bundle of hate is in charge of our nuclear weapons and can launch them at any time.
But what do I know? I am just scum.
